Transcending Ourselves

“As human beings we are made to surpass ourselves and are truly ourselves only when transcending ourselves.”
–  Huston Smith

As with our friends, the trees, we find our Genius in
our roots and connection to this earth and our Godness
in our branches and reaching to the sky.

Two ways to transcend ourselves: Godness and Genius.

Godness
The Divine and Universal: going beyond our human limitations, accessing our innate Divinity where all things are possible.

Genius
The human and personal: consistently growing, quantum leaping and extending the boundaries of our personal best. The practice of our craft. Living and working beyond our own innocently self-imposed self-consciousness.

To living our Godness and our Genius . . .

StrengthsFinder™: With Connectedness in Charge

A couple of weeks ago, I re-ordered my own internal Strengths structure.

I needed a better way to deal with stress in both my personal and professional life.  So, I put Connectedness in charge.

Before that time, Maximizer and Activator pretty much ran the show.

And, I get ahead of myself.  Let me back up a bit.

My top StrengthsFinder™ strengths:
1. Maximizer
2. Empathy
3. Connectedness
4. Activator
5. Individualization
6. Strategic

Maximizer consistently transforms good into great.  Empathy feels what’s going on with others.  Connectedness knows that everything is connected.  Activator gets things moving. Individualization knows, specifically, what you want and need.  And Strategic finds the best way.

The downside to having Activator and Maximizer in charge: Activator tends to follow the Ready, Fire, Aim approach to life, driving Maximizer and Strategic a bit crazy.  And Maximizer can go way too far with perfectionism without return on investment.

So, how did putting Connectedness in charge reduce my stress?  Connectedness connects me to myself, connects me to my Source, connects me to those I love and connects me to nature.  Connectedness knows what’s most important.  With Activator and Maximizer subservient to Connectedness, Activator fires more often in the right direction and Maximizer maximizes what’s most important.

Connectedness loves being outside in wide open space.
Connectedness connects me to what’s most important.

So, that’s a bit about my story.  Now, take me out and put you in.  What’s driving you?

If you haven’t taken the StrengthsFinder assessement, it takes just 30 – 40 minutes and $19.99. Take it now.

StrengthsFinder™: Doesn’t Everybody Do That?

After six years of coaching clients around their strengths, I am still tickled and surprised when I acknowledge them for some amazing thing that they do and they say, “What do you mean?  Doesn’t everybody do that?”

Last week I was with my friend Gina walking a lovely neighborhood retail area with shops and restaurants.  We were hanging flyers for my upcoming StrengthsFinder™ workshop.  And, I got the pure joy of seeing all of her strengths come into play.

shining in our strengths

Each of our unique combinations of strengths causes each of us to shine, to be strong in the way that only we can!

In the first three restaurants she told me about something on the menu that she knew I specifically would love.  At the bookstore she held the door open for the shopkeeper carrying in boxes of books.  Then she offered to help her unload the car.  At the next restaurant, they didn’t have a place for flyers and she said in her gracious, sing-songy voice, “No is a perfectly acceptable answer.”  At the next bar, she told and the bartender that we were coming back for one of their specialty tequilas.  At the paper store she told the owner how the workshop could help her and her employees.  In the mobile fashion truck, she talked to the girl about bringing the truck to her birthday party.

And so Gina went for 5 or 6 more shops.  When we were walking to our cars, I said, “That was amazing.  I have hung many flyers in my life and never like that.  It was like you gave everyone we talked to a gift, or several gifts.  And, you knew exactly what to give each one of them.”  She looked at me so quizzically and then said, “doesn’t everybody do that?”

Ah . . .

We are so strong in our strengths that we don’t even know they are strengths.  They’re “just what I do.”

When I told Gina she could make very good money with her strengths she couldn’t understand why anyone would pay her to just hang some flyers!

Navigating Change Successfully: The Certainty of God in Uncertain Situations

In the past six months, I have experienced more change in my life, both personally and professionally, than in the past six years.  Honestly, it has rocked me to my core.

Two of my clients and one of my friends have each experienced three or four unrelated deaths of people under 50, several of them suicides.  An acquaintance is recovering from a head-on collision.  She was riding a motorcycle.  Another took her own life.

I have told my coach several times over the past few months, “I don’t know who I am.“ Other times, I told her, “I don’t know where I am.”  Twice she asked me if I wanted to read the prayers in my book, the book that I wrote.  Both times, I told her I did want to read them.  And, I did read them.

Yet, they didn’t soak in very deeply.  Until recently.

We are both Divine and human.

The human part of me HAS been a bit lost, sometimes hard to find during this time.  The Divine part is ever-present, ever-radiant, unwavering.

I do know who I am.

“I am love, power, beauty and mystery.
I am love, joy, peace and hope.
I am love, brilliance, health and wealth.
I am love and abundance.
I am God expressed.”

I am the Grace of God.  So are you. As are my clients, friends and acquaintances.  When I live as though I know that, I am unwavering in the face of change.  I want that for you, too.

StrengthsFinder™: What Do Your Strengths Need?

One of my clients has the strengths of Input, Intellection and Ideation in her top 5 StrengthsFinder™ strengths.  If she doesn’t have an hour or two of alone time every day to think, reflect and mediate, she gets super cranky.  Another has Empathy as her top strength.  If she doesn’t have alone time every day without naturally feeling what others feel, then she gets cranky.  Different strengths.  Same need.  For different reasons.

My Empathy/Connectedness/Relator needs to have an authentic, deep, one-on-one connection with one or two people every day or I become disconnected.  My Competition/Achiever/Command niece needs to be challenged, provoked and have clear rules of engagement or she’s not interested.  While my Harmony/Empathy assistant needs us all to play nice or she’ll find nicer playmates.  Different strengths.  Different needs.  For different reasons.

All of us have strengths.  All of our strengths have needs.  Yet we rarely talk about the needs, lest we seem needy.

daydreaming300x200

womanaway300x200

All of our strengths have needs.  And, it’s individual for each of us.  Same strength, different need.  Different strength, same need.  Different day, same strength different need.  Two of our own strengths, competing needs.  The trick: allowing all the needs, attending to all of the needs to receive the greatest value of the strengths.

To complicate matters, while each of our strengths have needs, the needs of one strength may conflict with the needs of another. Yikes, a bit of an internal battle.

If we acknowledge that we all have needs, does it make it a bit easier to talk about them?  If we acknowledge we sometimes have conflicting needs – both with those around us and within ourselves, does it help us work together and within ourselves to meet all of those needs?

Discovering Your Way: Resolving the Struggle Within

I can relentlessly hold a vision of your brilliance until you are living your brilliance.  I will create space that naturally brings out more of you.  Yet I sometimes get really upset with myself for not getting more stuff done.  I beat myself up with thoughts like, “Yes, it’s great that you’re helping people be more fully themselves, but can’t you also get the insurance thing handled or get your files in order, too?”

The irony: I know better.

Bringing out the “best” in a person involves:

–  allowing all parts of that person (Starting with me!)
–  supporting each person in using their strengths more
and working interdependently with others for the rest.

What does that look like in real life?

AS350x258

As we accept all parts of ourselves, live from our strengths
and engage interdependently with others in areas that are
not our strengths, we then begin to resolve our struggle within.

I’m practicing making peace with the parts of me that I judge, don’t like and think shouldn’t exist.  It’s a practice because it isn’t yet natural or consistent  So, when I notice I haven’t gotten to the insurance thing, I take a deep breath, smile for myself and accept what is.

Then, I call my amazingly capable insurance broker.  Yes, years ago, I was willing to get a broker to handle 95% of the insurance thing because I’m not good at it. I have more time to draw out my genius and your genius while Barbara, my insurance broker takes care of the details of my insurance – glorious interdependence.

What does internal resolution look like for you?  What parts of you do you still think “should” be different?  In what areas of your life do you need more collaboration, more interdependence?

Clear Intention: Will You Get Messy?

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
– Martin Luther King, Jr

Martin Luther King, Jr would have been 85 today.

I love celebrating him.  I am reminded of the progress we’ve made and how far we still must go.

I am reminded to ask myself how messy I am willing to get to consistently stand for what I believe in.

Martin Luther King Jr.Memorial in City Park

MLK Memorial in City Park.  Denver, Colorado.
Fog in Denver is quite rare.  Yet it’s so fitting for Martin Luther King Jr as he talked about taking just the step in front of you if that is all you can see.  He lived and died in a time of severe fogginess.  We honor him today for the compassionate and adamant clarity he brought to an issue that to this day requires more light and clarity.

How willing am I to look at my own actions that still come from bias, prejudice or fear?  How willing am I to change those actions however imperfectly?  How willing am I to admit how far I have to go?

What about you?  Are you willing to join me in the messiness?

What are you willing to take a stand for, however imperfectly?

Find Your Strongest Life: Being Fully Present with Discomfort Could Bring Sweet Freedom?

I was born the oldest of five kids to a mother who didn’t really want kids.  Yet she didn’t feel she had a choice.

Growing up, I wanted to be wanted.  I had several girlfriends whose mothers were engaged with and interested in their daughters and sometimes me by extension.  That felt great.  I babysat for several families and a couple of the moms got to know me.  That felt good.

When I started high school, boys started to notice me, and I felt like I had hit the jackpot.  I knew it!  Being wanted was the best feeling in the world!

I didn’t realize it back then, but in that innocent and natural desire, I was creating a prison.  Being wanted became my drug.  I was high when I felt wanted and desperately looking for the next fix when I didn’t feel wanted.  Chasing the feeling that came with being wanted held me hostage for decades.

Maybe you’ve had a similar experience?  Or have you been chasing degrees?  Being needed?  Fitting in? More money? A certain number on the scale?  You fill in the blank.  What have you been chasing that has held you hostage?

I finally hit bottom, as they say in AA.  Willing to never have another man want me.

I’ve been learning that sitting with the pain and discomfort of not feeling wanted AND not doing anything to get my fix is my road to freedom.

I discovered a few months ago while doing some deep work with my coach that my WHY, my purpose, involves inspiring and urging each of us to freedom from innocently self-imposed prisons.  I wish I had known this me 30 years ago.  And, I feel grateful to know her today!

jumping girl

I am starting to get  it  – experiencing the inner freedom that comes from being with things as they are rather than how I think they must be, how I think I need them to be . . . ahhhhh.

I also realize that the experiences of the young-girl and young-woman me are as much a part of my path and my purpose as the healing of those experiences.

I am now discovering that beyond the pain of wanting to feel wanted is a delicious, sweet freedom.  I’m beginning to have glimpses of wanting the freedom more that the temporary high of feeling wanted.

And, lest I start chasing freedom, during the times I don’t feel free, I simply allow myself to be present with me there, too.

I dedicate my 2014 to Freedom.

What about you?  To what do you dedicate your 2014?

Happy New Year!  Happy New You!

Mindfulness: Whose Exceptional Natural Capacity

For almost a year now, I have been working toward launching my wonderful new brand and program, Free Your G, into the world.  Why has it taken so long?  Impatient by nature, I have asked this question repeatedly.  Only to hear echoed back from the beyond, “It takes as long as it takes.”

You notice even now that I am telling you about it, rather than launching it – whatever launching means!  And, I am beginning to have a sense of why the very long “launch.”

Free Your G.  Free Your Genius.

I cannot count how many people have told me some variation of, “I don’t have a Genius.  I don’t know about Genius.  I’m not a Genius.”

How can we free what we don’t know exists?

So, for the last year I have been in this huge inquiry.  Why don’t people know they have a Genius?  How can I help them know?  Once they know, what will it take for them to free it?!?

Finally, as a bit of a last resort, I turned to the dictionary.  One of the definitions of Genius: an exceptional natural capacity.

Eureka, I get it!!!  It’s the exceptional coupled with natural that thows us off.  “Well of course I’m good (read: exceptional) at (fill in the blank).  Isn’t everybody? (Because it’s natural to me, I assume it’s natural to everybody.)

Whose exceptional natural capacity?  YOURS.  Maybe only yours.  Among 7 billion people.  Now that’s Genius!

To transform your experience of yourself and your life, take some time to consider: in what areas of my life and work do I have exceptional natural capacity?

20245752happyyellowfish

Our Genius tends to elude us just as the fish isn’t
particularly aware that he’s in water.

If it doesn’t come to you right away, stick with it.  Like a fish who has a exceptional natural capacity to live in water, we don’t know that our Genius is exceptional because it is what we know.  What we’ve always known.

With you as my witness, in 2014 Free Your G is coming out of the water and boldly launching into the world!

Will you join me and make 2014 the year of your Genius?  I would love to hasten your discovery process and help you to quickly see into your blind spots!

Find Your Strongest Life: If Not Stronger, then Weaker

A couple of days before Thanksgiving, I started a new daily practice of beginning my day with a randomly chosen affirmative prayer from my own book, Thriving Work. Since I’ve done it only about every other day, I’ve gotten to experience the difference between starting my day with a prayer focus and starting my day without one.

I’ve done the research.  Let’s just say, I would be well advised to not leave home without a prayer focus.  What a difference it makes to pause for a minute or two to focus on my Divinity and my boundless capacity.

While Thriving Work offers me 33 prayers, it doesn’t seem to matter which one I turn to.  All of them call me to the stronger me, the better-person me.

And today it occurred to me: If I’m not focused on the stronger me, then I’m weaker.  That startled me.

It’s a choice.

If we don't choose Strong, we choose weak by default.

If we don’t choose Strong, we choose weak by default.

I choose Strong.  Daily.  Why would I do something so wonderful and easy only every other day?  Ah, to be human.

What about you?  What daily practice could you put in place to more consistently choose Strong You?

I share today’s prayer with you:

Move Me

Dear God, move me.
Dear God, use me.
Dear God, may I lose me
To your Divinity.

Dear God, I give you my fear,
My doubt,
My hesitation,
My resistance,
My desire to stay small, play safe,

Dear God, may I lose me
To your Divinity.
Dear God, use me.
Dear God, move me.
